Corvallis cougar: kill or relocate?
Posted by: Matt Neznanski on April 23, 2009 at 1:10PM PST
By now, you've heard about the cougar prowling around north Corvallis and plans by the state Department of Fish and Wildlife to catch and kill the cat.

But there's been lots of talk about relocating it or getting a preserve or something to collect it.

What do you think?

I don't see why relocating the cat would be more of a problem than killing it. Unless the cat has caused harm or endangered humans, it deserves every right to continue living. The real question is how did it get here and where did it come from?

Brooks Fahy (quoted in the Friday GT article), the executive director of Predator Defense sums up my sentiments:

“This is not an extraordinary event,” said Fahy, who has worked as a veterinary technician specializing in wildlife rehabilitation.

“Everybody just back off; be cautious,” Fahy said. “Nobody has been threatened. The fact you are seeing an animal is no reason to go out and kill it.” He said setting up a trap which will likely result in the animal’s death was “overkill.”

“This is a situation that has been so blown out of proportion that it’s mind-boggling,” he added.

Let the cougar live. Children and pets should be supervised at all times IMHO and all cats never attack unless they can surprise a loner so that should solve any safety concerns.

We need to learn to share the planet with all life forms. Hopefully big kitty will eat the excess deer in the city.

I think we should relocate it. I've experienced one of those animals first hand and know they only are aggressive when food is scarce and we invade their territory. They are just animals trying to survive as well as we are. Relocate and move on! Killing don't solve anything

I think it needs to be killed before it kills a young child. They might want to be sure they kill any of the other ones too as they will all come looking around to eat our pets. All cougars do is run around attacking things, poop in our yards and basically urinate on stuff too. Just a dangerous animal that god willing needs to know it's place and that is not around our neighbor hoods.

All JOKING ASIDE....if someone decides to allow reckless building, logging, mining and a host of other reasons to screw up the balance with nature this stuff will continue to occur. If you live by the woods you take your chances plain and simple. Rather than kill the cougars lets have some common sense instead.

Of course you re-locate the animal unless it's already hurt someone and shows no fear of doing it again. Then unfortunately you do what you have to do in order to keep folks safe.

I like reading or listening to the "Rush Limbaugh types" talk about killing things though....makes me feel like my intelligence level is higher than it really is.
